The Michigan Senate Committee on Transportation and Tourism approved an amendment sponsored by the Truck Renting & Leasing Association (TRALA) on Sept. 17, 2002, to exempt commercial vehicle lessors from new dealer licensing requirements. Also supporting the amendment were the Michigan Trucking Association and the Michigan Car and Truck Renting and Leasing Association. The amended bills, known as Michigan House Bills 5363 and 5464, are expected to be approved by the full Senate and House in November. Gov. John Engler indicated he would sign the bills. The amended bills would exempt from a wide range of new licensing requirements vehicle lessors who are “engaged in leasing vehicles solely for commercial or other non-household use.”
