Mercedes-Benz Vans Future Transportation, a division of Daimler AG with offices in Menlo Park, Calif., announced it will unveil and demonstrate CoROS for the first time in North America at the Fleet Forward Conference in San Francisco on Oct. 9.

CoROS, short for Cargo Recognition and Organization System, transforms the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van into an intelligent cargo space with computer vision and machine learning, said Nick Tempelhoff, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans Future Transportation North America, the team behind CoROS.

CoROS uses an array of cameras to identify, scan, and record packages as they are brought into the vehicle and recommends the optimal loading position based on the package’s size and final destination.

CoROS continuously monitors the cargo space and tracks any changes to a package’s location throughout the day. At each stop, the system automatically looks up the customer’s order and directs the driver to that customer’s packages via LEDs installed on shelves and throughout the cargo space.

“We feel CoROS represents a significant technological step forward for package delivery and the logistics industry,” Tempelhoff said. “CoROS uses automation to create efficiencies across the entire last-mile logistics chain — unlocking significant time and cost savings for fleets.”

The demonstration at Fleet Forward Conference will take place using a working model of CoROS on a Sprinter van.

“We’re excited that Fleet Forward attendees will get an up-close understanding of CoROS before it goes to market,” said Chris Brown, executive editor at Bobit Business Media and conference chair. “Mercedes chose to reveal this game-changing technology in front of the audience that matters most — the fleet industry.”

The product’s worldwide reveal will take place at the 67th IAA for Commercial Vehicles in Hannover, Germany on Sept. 19.

Additionally, Tempelhoff will deliver a plenary address titled “Solutions for the Future of Fleet Transportation.” In the seminar, Tempelhoff will address big picture trends, challenges, and solutions for fleets when it comes to last-mile logistics.

The Fleet Forward Conference, dedicated to mobility solutions for fleets, convenes Oct. 8-10 at The Pearl in San Francisco.
