Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling approximately 4,073 2018 Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class sedans due to an electrical system problem that could short-circuit the battery.
The recall affects a trio of C-Class body styles, including the sedan, coupe, and cabrio, as well as the E300 midsize sedan. The respective 4Matic four-wheel-drive versions are also included.
Specifically, the cover for the starter battery may not fully cover the live positive electrical wire, and in certain collisions, the vehicle's strut brace may deform and short-circuit the battery. In the event the battery is shorted, the emergency door unlocking would malfunction, leaving emergency responders unable to access the vehicle. In addition, the short circuit could cause a fire.
To remedy the problem, Mercedes-Benz will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive pole cover, at no cost to customers. The recall begins Nov. 23. Owners may reach the company's customer service at (800) 367-6372.
