Mazda has begun selling its diesel-powered 2019 CX-5 compact SUV following the vehicle's debut at the New York auto show on April 17.
The vehicle, which has been in the works for several years, will be offered in the Signature trim with all-wheel drive. The twin-turbocharged Skyactive-D 2.2-liter engine should deliver 168 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. EPA-rated fuel economy has been set at 27 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.
Mazda worked closely with regulators, including the California Air Resources Board, to ensure the engine meets emissions standards and regulations, according to Mazda.
The diesel CX-5 retails for $42,045, which includes a $1,045 delivery fee that increases to $1,090 for Alaska buyers.
Diesel-focused buyers now have almost 50 choices among light-duty 2019-model-year vehicles for a diesel powertrain, according to the Diesel Technology Forum.
