BOSTON – Dr. Andreas Lippert, director of Global Energy Systems for General Motors Corporation, will join Mascoma Corporation Scientific Advisory Board, expanding the automaker's involvement with Mascoma as it moves closer to commercial production of cellulosic fuels.

Mascoma Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Jamerson recently made the announcement during a media tour of Mascoma's laboratories.

"We look forward to building our relationship with Andreas and tapping into his knowledge of the automotive and transportation fuels industries," Jamerson said. "He brings a new dimension of corporate experience to our scientific team."

Dr. Charles Wyman, Mascoma cofounder and professor of Environmental Engineering Design at University of California, Riverside, is chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board.

Lippert leads GM's strategic analysis and outlook on global energy developments and energy supply chains, and coauthored GM's recent foundational outlook on energy diversity for transportation. He has authored more than 20 research papers, conference publications, and reports. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The Mascoma Corporation Scientific Advisory Board is comprised of technology leaders with in-depth knowledge of the composition and structure of cellulosic biomass, conversion of biomass to sugars using microorganisms, and the fermentation of these sugars, biomass processing, and related industries.

The Scientific Advisory Board provides Mascoma with broad insight into important technical, business, and engineering aspects of the technology and business of converting cellulosic biomass into biofuels and biomaterials, providing the management team with regular assessments of Mascoma's approach to technology discovery, development, and deployment.
