Macon City Wants Fleet Cut 10%

MACON, GA - Based on a July 14 city council committee decision, Macon city administration has been given 90 days to come up with a plan for cutting the vehicle fleet by 10 percent, according to the Macon Telegraph.
Citywide, Macon has about 670 vehicles in its fleet. Savings by cutting fleet is uncertain at this point, but maintenance expenses are expected to decline as a result. Aging fleet vehicles would be prime candidates, as the city still operates police cars a decade old, and for a period in the previous mayoral administration, officials went several years in a row without purchasing any new ones, the Telegraph reported.
Fuel is another expense expected to go down once fleet size decreases.
Rather than making cuts across the board, the administration will closely scrutinize to determine which type of vehicle or department could best withstand reductions, according to the Telegraph.
