The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently bestowed its highest safety recognition on the 2019 Kia Stinger. The car received a Top Safety Pick+ award when it is equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.
This latest accolade brings Kia to a total of 10 Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ awards for 2019 models.
IIHS engineers put the large car through the paces. In a series of six crashworthiness tests, the Kia Stinger scored good ratings across the board. The rigorous evaluations included the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.
However, in order to quality for a Top Safety designation, a car must also score an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention as well as a good headlight rating.
The Stinger lived up to the standard on both counts. Its available front crash prevention system earns a superior rating, with the vehicle avoiding collisions in 12 mph and 25 mph IIHS track tests.
The car also offers two good-rated headlight systems. These include static LED projector headlights that are available both with and without high-beam assist, a system that automatically switches between high beams and low beams, depending on the presence of other vehicles.
Distracted driving remains one of the most persistent risks in fleet operations. New approaches focus on removing mobile device use entirely while adding real-time safety support.
