According to an article in the Lawrence, KS Journal-World on August 22, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ administration does not like what it sees in the state vehicle program. Secretary of Administration Howard Fricke indicated that at 8,661, there are too many state vehicles, too many of which are being underused. In addition, Fricke noted that the policies for state employees to use vehicles don’t make sense. The newspaper reported earlier in August that it had found a parking lot in Topeka which was filled with more than 130 unused state vehicles, representing an investment of more than $2 million. Fricke said that 40 percent of the Department of Administration vehicles were being driven less than 15,000 miles per year, the cutoff point considered necessary to make the purchase of a state vehicle cost-efficient. He added that anecdotal stories he has heard suggest that the state needs to reimburse state employees more when they use their own vehicles.
