Home furnishings company IKEA Australia is testing a micro-mobility option in its Sydney delivery fleet. Two “tuks tuks,” small three-wheeled vehicles powered by a 9kWh swappable battery, are undergoing a three-month trial for parcel delivery within a 10 km radius of the IKEA Tempe location.

The trial is one measure in Swedish-based IKEA's global ambition of zero emission deliveries by 2025 and marks the first time tuk tuks will be seen on Australian roads. The two vehicles have been nicknamed Tük-se and Tack-se, (“tack” is Swedish for “Thanks”).

“Working closely with our transport partner ANC Delivers, we are excited to trial and test innovative methods that help get us closer to our goal of 100% zero emission deliveries,” said Tiffany Mosura-Lesnock, IKEA Tempe manager.

IKEA has been testing other zero emissions vehicles across the globe, including electric rickshaws in India, cargo bikes in Madrid, and barges down the Seine in Paris.

“With more people living in medium- or high-density housing and 8.1% of households in capital cities not owning a vehicle, we face new delivery, emissions, and urban mobility challenges in an environment where consumers are looking for more sustainable options,” said Mo Abbas, Mo Abbas, group executive strategy and marketing for ANC Delivers.
