Idaho ‘Vortal’ Goes Truckin'

Idaho officials have launched a Web site for the state’s trucking industry, the first of what will be a series of government-run portals for specific industries, according to Federal Computer Week magazine. The new portal — www.trucking.idaho.gov — is the product of three Idaho agencies that work closely with motor carrier firms and companies with fleet vehicles. Intended as a way for those companies to conduct business around the clock, the site provides a quick and easy way to access information from the Idaho Transportation Department, the State Tax Commission, and the State Police. Information and functions available on the site range from applying for temporary trip permits and license renewals to accessing maps, road and weather reports, and all state rules and regulations. Users must register for an account, which can also be used to access government services on any of the Access Idaho sites. The site, however, extends beyond just Idaho, also linking with the transportation sites of neighboring states and the federal government. Working with the Idaho Information Consortium, the manager of the main Idaho government portal and a subsidiary of NIC Inc., the state plans to develop several similar “vortals,” or vertical industry portals, officials said.
