Hyundai Recalls Elantras, Sonatas for Coil Springs
The recall, set to get under way Nov. 30, covers 27,700 2011-MY vehicles in salt-belt states.

Hyundai Motor America is recalling 27,700 2011 model-year Elantra and Sonata vehicles in states that use road salt for snow removal because resulting corrosion may have damaged front coil springs, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
The Elantras were manufactured from Nov. 12, 2010, to March 31, 2011. The Sonatas were manufactured from Dec. 11, 2009, to Feb. 28, 2010. They were originally sold in, or are currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
Corrosion caused by road salt exposure makes the front coil springs at risk for fracturing.
“If a front coil spring fractures, it may contact the tire, possibly puncturing it, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said.
Hyundai dealers will replace the front coil springs, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin Nov. 30.
Vehicles previously registered in salt-belt states that are currently registered elsewhere are also eligible to be inspected and repaired, NHTSA added.
