Hyundai has begun selling its 2018 Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid, which offers more than 650 miles of range, including 29 miles in electric mode, Hyundai has announced.
The compact sedan — the third in the Ioniq lineup following the Ioniq Electric and Ioniq Hybrid — has been given a fuel economy rating of 52 miles per gallon in gasoline mode and an equivalent of 119 mpg with electrification included. Both ratings consider city and freeway driving.
The 2018 Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid is powered by a Kappa 1.6-liter direct-injected Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine that's paired with a 45-kilowatt electric motor. A 8.9-kilowatt-per-hour lithium-ion battery pack feeds the electric motor.
The gasoline engine makes 104 horsepower and 109 lb.-ft. of torque, while the electric motor provides 60 hp in the pairing. Power is delivered through a six-speed double-clutch trasmission. The vehicle can reach a top speed of 75 mph.
Hyundai is making several changes to the Ioniq lineup, including available paddle shifters for the Hybrid (SEL and Limited trims), a new lane keep assist function added to the lane departure warning (SEL Tech and Limited with the Ultimate package), a new available red color for Hybrid models, and simplified trim grades for the Electric model to offer Electric and Limited.
