Honda Motor Co. said it will expand use of its next-generation gasoline-electric hybrid system, following its decision to end production of the Insight Hybrid.

Honda has introduced its new two-motor hybrid powertrain with the 2014 Accord Plug-In Hybrid, and plans to roll it out to additional models. The Accord Plug-In Hybrid sedan gets an EPA-rated 50 miles per gallon city, and is considered the most fuel-efficient five-passenger sedan in the U.S., according to the automaker.

Honda will begin introducing its so-called Earth Dreams engines, transmissions, and electromotive technologies in the next three to four years.

Earlier this week, a Honda spokesperson said the Insight Hybrid would cease production by the end of the month. It was introduced in 1999, as the first gasoline-electric hybrid in the U.S.
