The Hawaii Department of Transportation this month launched a new vehicle safety inspection program in which inspectors instantly submit their reports electronically using an iPad. Previously, inspection stations submitted monthly reports.
"With this program, we enter the new age of wireless computerization, instant recordation and protection from fraud and theft," said Glenn Okimoto, director of the Hawaii DOT.
The cost of each vehicle inspection has also increased to $19.19 plus tax, reports Hawaii News Now.
The HDOT Motor Vehicle Safety Office worked closely with the city and county of Honolulu and the Neighbor Island counties to develop the new program. They are still collaborating to iron out the kinks. Some vehicle inspectors have needed extra support to master use of the iPad.
