Grants to Help Pay for Greener Trucks Serving Calif. Ports

LONG BEACH, CA - The South Coast Air Quality Management District on June 4 awarded more than $34 million in state and federal grants to replace 598 trucks operating at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, as well as trucks delivering goods across the region, the Daily Breeze newspaper reported.

LONG BEACH, CA - The South Coast Air Quality Management District on June 4 awarded more than $34 million in state and federal grants to replace 598 trucks operating at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, as well as trucks delivering goods across the region, the Daily Breeze newspaper reported.

A total of $17.45 million will be spent to replace 400 diesel trucks used in goods movement across Southern California. Another $13.17 million is set aside to purchase 132 natural gas-fueled trucks. A total of $3.44 million will be spent to replace 66 diesel trucks operating at the twin ports and rail yards.

The AQMD also allocated an additional $85,000 for a truck-stop electrification project in Wilmington and another $3 million to re-power four switcher locomotives operated at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail yard in San Bernardino.

The grants will be funded with Proposition 1B and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act monies.
