DETROIT – With 2009 models backing up dealer lots, General Motors has suspended production on the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid and will instead focus on a newer, more efficient system, according to Terry Rhadigan, director, North American Product Communications, General Motors.
GM is reportedly still filling some fleet orders, according to the Detroit News.
The four-cylinder models with a six-speed transmission achieve 22 mpg city/33 mpg highway, and cost about $4,000 less than the current mild hybrid model, which gets 26 mpg city/34 mpg highway. The current hybrid features a belt-driven starter that allows the engine to shut off when the car is stopped.
Rhadigan said the new system will debut with new models in the summer of 2010, Automotive Fleet confirmed.
