DETROIT - General Motors engineers have found that real-world tests show that the Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car can travel 40 miles on a single charge as expected, the Associated Press reported.

Engineers are testing six Volts, driving them around the Detroit area to assess their performance.

Though General Motors still has a few things to tweak with the computer software and controls, the car is on schedule for full production in November, engineer Andrew Farah told AP.

Farah said he got 41.5 miles and 42.5 miles on his last two electric cycles of the Volt. He operated the car under normal driving conditions, running errands around town. Range depends on weather, terrain and driving habits.

The Volt's 1.4-liter gas engine kicks on whenever the batteries are depleted of their charge. The car gets about 50 mpg when the gas engine turns on to generate electricity to power the electric motor. The gasoline engine adds more than 300 miles to the Volt's range.
