Drivers of General Motors vehicles will be able to purchase Shell fuel and other products or services from their dashboard using a new digital platform known as GM Marketplace, the automaker has announced.
The in-dash fuel purchases aren't currently available following the launch of the platform last week. They will be offered soon, according to a release.
GM Marketplace launched with 11 partners and allows users to locate the closest Shell and ExxonMobil fuel stations and pay for parking through Parkopedia among its services. Through the GM in-dash app, drivers can purchase 4G LTE Data packages, extend their OnStar subscription or receive offers for certified service, parts and accessories for their specific vehicle.
Other in-dash apps will include Starbucks (early 2018), Dunkin' Donuts, Wingstop, TGI Fridays, Priceline.com for hotel reservations, Applebee's, IHOP, and Delivery.com for grocery orders.
"The average American spends 46 minutes per day on the road driving," said Santiago Chamorro, GM's vice president for global connected customer experience. "Leveraging connectivity and our unique data capabilities, we have an opportunity to make every trip more productive and give our customers time back. Marketplace is the first of a suite of new personalization features that we will roll out over the next 12 to 18 months to nearly four million U.S. drivers."
GM is adding the marketplace to 2017 and 2018 model-year vehicles from Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick that have compatible infotainment systems, and will continue to roll it out to compatible new vehicles. Users don't need a separate data plan to use Marketplace because it taps into the vehicle's embedded 4G LTE equipment.
