GM Details 2016 Malibu's Weight Loss Plan

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu has slimmed down by 300 pounds from the outgoing model by using more aluminum, a leaner body structure, streamlined instrument panel, softer interior materials, and a lighter engine.
General Motors detailed the improved 3,100-pound curb weight of the 2016 Malibu 1LT equipped with the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.
The Malibu, which will arrive in the fourth quarter, is expected to dramatically improve its fuel economy, especially with a hybrid model that may achieve 48 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg on the highway.
The 2016 Malibu uses a leaner, stronger body structure that reduces total mass by 120 pounds, according to GM.
Increased use of aluminum parts such as suspension knuckles and chassis components has also significantly contributed to the weight reduction. The aluminum hood, for example, is 6.6 pounds lighter than the previous steel hood.
A streamlined instrument panel assembly and lighter power accessories have also helped, including new power window regulators and a more simplified construction.
The Malibu's available leather seats are 40.6 pounds lighter that the current model. Other lighter interior materials include a new trunk liner and proprietary interior carpet material.
The Malibu's new four-cylinder is 86 pounds lighter than the outgoing 2.5-liter engine.
