DETROIT – General Motors is adding new safety equipment and the Chevrolet MyLink system to the vehicle for the 2012 model-year. The new safety technology the automaker added includes a camera-based crash-avoidance system.
The camera is mounted on the windshield on the back of the rear-view mirror (facing the road ahead) and looks for vehicle shapes and lane markings. The system uses audible warnings and a visual display to warn the driver when a collision is about to happen, when changing lanes without signaling beforehand, or when following too closely. The system uses a green icon at speeds above 30 mph to show the driver the system is active. The green icon switches to a flashing amber color, and emits warning sounds, if the vehicle drifts outside the lane markings without the driver signaling first. The option is available on the LTZ model of the Equinox for $295.
