General Motors is working with AT&T to embed 4G LTE mobile broadband to its 2015 model-year vehicles, including most 2015 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac models available in 2014 in the U.S. and Canada.

This technology allows a vehicle to act as a WiFi hot spot, new infotainment option, real-time updates to software, and faster in-vehicle application downloads. GM said the 4G LTE technology provides mobile data transfer speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G technologies and can support simultaneous voice and data connections.

For fleet drivers who need access to the Internet, for example while on a customer service or sales call, the vehicle’s 4G LTE connection would be able to provide them with the access they need.

“In addition to allowing consumers to bring in and connect to personal mobile devices, the vehicle will also act as its own mobile device, enabling embedded vehicle capabilities,” said Mary Chan, president, Global Connected Consumer, General Motors. “Turning this vision into a reality starts with enabling fast, reliable and responsive connectivity within the vehicle. Through this built-in 4G LTE connection we have the opportunity to reinvent the mobile experience inside a vehicle.”

Other applications include vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, which could provide improved safety and convenience for drivers and passengers, according to GM. The automaker hasn't yet stated whether this feature would require a paid subscription to use.
