According to a statement from DaimlerChrysler on October 1, getting around Boston will be easier and pollution-free for service providers as well as during the upcoming 2004 Democratic National Convention to be held here, thanks to a donation of 75 neighborhood electric vehicles from Global Electric Motorcars (GEM). The donation completes a program that has seen more than 2,000 GEM vehicles provided to municipalities and charitable and service organizations. “Everyone tries to be more efficient in their daily activities and thanks to GEM, Boston has just gotten even better in that regard,” said Mayor Thomas Menino during a luncheon at the Chief Executives Club of Boston, sponsored by Boston College. “GEM vehicles are functional and practical, allowing us to be more energy conscious.” GEMs are classified by the federal government as Low Speed Vehicles (LSV), with a top speed of 25 mph. They are alternatives to full-size automobiles for short trips, as well as a primary people mover on corporate, academic and military campuses, especially ones with both public and private roads between buildings. “The search for safe and viable alternative forms of transportation is ongoing as we seek long-term travel options for consumers,” said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chrysler Group President and CEO, Chrysler Group. “GEM provides real-world, immediate solutions with significant environmental benefits in one, easy-to-use package.” More than 26,000 GEMs are on roads posted at 35 miles per hour or less across the country since they went into production four years ago. Global Electric Motorcars is a subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler.
