With a potential across-the-board slash in spending looming over state agencies, Georgia officials may forgo issuing new plastic licenses when drivers apply for license renewal. Instead, the Associated Press reported, the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety (DMVS) is exploring a tamper-resistant sticker motorists will affix to the back of their existing licenses. With a cost of about 60 cents, compared to the $1.15 expense of a new laminated license, the sticker option would save the state $315,000. The $15 renewal fee would remain the same. Preparing for a worst-case scenario budget crisis, Georgia state agencies are confronting cuts of 7.5 percent. At the DMVS, that budget reduction amounts to $5.8 million.
