Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation announced that 2004-model Mercedes-Benz MBE900 diesel engines would be standard on MT-45 SR walk-in van chassis applications. The 2004 model MBE900 will be available in the first quarter of 2004. The 4.3L, four-cylinder MBE900 engine combines electronic controls, fuel injection, and extended maintenance cycles to provide a solution for numerous walk-in van applications. The MBE900 diesel engine available in the MT-45 SR chassis offers 170 horsepower and 420 lb. ft torque. It delivers this torque at a low RPM, allowing for fewer, smoother shifts, better driveability, and more capacity to climb hills and negotiate stop-and-go traffic. The new engine’s electronic control system can customize the engine for peak efficiency. The engines feature full diagnostics to assist maintenance personnel in engine assessment. Exhaust gas recirculation allows the MBE900 to achieve 2004 emissions standards. The electronic engine management system is self-diagnosing and self-protecting. Additionally, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link software allows the owner to run periodic reports for a comprehensive view of vehicle operation, assisting in the maintenance of the engine's efficiency and performance. The engine is designed to be durable. Core components include induction-hardened cylinder bores, cam and crankshafts, forged steel connecting rods, chrome ceramic-coated piston rings, and a cast iron engine block optimized for strength. The MBE900 is backed by a warranty which features a base 3-year, 150,000-mile warranty for on-highway applications. Extended warranties are available. Maintenance intervals are 15,000 miles. The engines are supported by the Freightliner dealer network and the Detroit Diesel parts and service network.
