France has announced plans to phase out diesel fuel in consumer vehicles beginning in 2015, according to a report by Reuters.
The government will launch a car identification system to rate vehicles by the amount of pollution they emit. About 80 percent of French motorists drive diesel-powered cars, according to the Reuters report.
Taxation will be used to orient consumers away from diesel to more ecological choices. Plans are afoot to raise the TICPE excise tax on diesel by 2 euro cents per liter, which is expected to generate 807 million euros in 2015, according to Reuters.
On the flipside, the French government announced earlier in the year that it would provide a bonus of 10,000 euros (about $13,500) to anyone who buys an electric car.
