WASHINGTON, D.C. --- Toyota Motor North America is recalling 110,000 MY 2000-2003 Tundra trucks sold or currently registered in states that use road salt in winter snow conditions. 

Excessive corrosion of the rear cross member, resulting from contact with the road salt, may cause the separation of the spare tire stowed under the truck bed. Eventually, this corrosion may also affect the functionality of the rear brake line at the proportioning valve, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. 

Separation of the spare tire and rear brake failure could increase the risk of a crash. 

Toyota is asking affected truck owners to remove the spare tire from under the vehicle before driving. Toyota will inspect the rear cross member as well as the proportioning valve mounted on its assembly. This inspection, along with any necessary replacements, will be performed free of charge. 

The safety recall is expected to begin on or before Dec. 15. 

The states affected by the recall are Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The recall also affects Washington, D.C.
