The state fleet has too many sport/utility vehicles, says Governor Ed Rendell. According to The Associated Press, during a May 28, 2003, news conference Rendell stated that although state employees are routinely required to travel in harsh weather and need an all-terrain vehicle to do so, many of those using the state vehicles do not fall into that category. As one of a series of money-saving initiatives, Rendell suggested other state employees drive compact sedans as a way to cut fuel costs, therefore creating a smaller, yet more effective state fleet.
