FCA US, Ford to Recall Vehicles for Air Bag Controls
The recalls will affect more than 1 million vehicles equipped with restraint control modules manufactured by Robert Bosch LLC.
FCA US, formerly known as Chrysler Group, and Ford Motor Co. are recalling more than 1 million vehicles because their air bags may not deploy properly in a collision, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
The problem lies with the vehicles’ restraint control module, the AV10+, manufactured by Robert Bosch LLC from Feb. 1, 2012, to Aug. 27, 2013. In these units, the coating of the circuit boards may not have been cured properly – a condition that can lead to shorting in those circuits, NHTSA said. Depending on which circuits short, the frontal air bags, side curtain air bags and seat belt pretensioners may not deploy when needed.
Ford and FCA US are launching their own safety recall campaigns to address the issue, NHTSA said.
