Volkswagen's Electrify America plans to install 11 DC fast-charging stations with more than 56 chargers in North Carolina by summer, as the group accelerates its pace across the nation, the company has announced.

The North Carolina charging stations will range in power from 50 kilowatts to 150 kW and up to 350 kW. The later charger can add 20 miles of vehicle range per minute.The 50-kW chargers are the most commonly used today.

Electrify America has already installed DC chargers in five locations in the state, including the Walmart Supercenter in Henderson that opened Dec. 17, 2018; Walmart Supercenter in Wake Forest that opened March 1; Sheetz convenience store in Rocky Mount that opened Feb. 4; Sam's Club in Asheville that opened April 3; and Pleasant Valley Promenade in Raleigh that opened March 7.

Plug-in NC and Triangle Clean Cities will host an Electric Vehicle Meetup from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 10 at the new fast charging station located in Pleasant Valley Promenade.

Electrify America plans to construct six more charging sites in Greensboro, Charlotte, Durham, Smithfield, Lumberton, and Cary.

The company has set a goal to have 484 charging stations with more than 2,000 DC fast chargers installed or under construction by summer across the nation. It began installing the stations in May 2018 with its first site in Chicopee, Massachusetts.
