Law enforcement in Utah's biggest city conducted its annual crack down on distracted driving, issuing 1,188 warnings and 27 citations to Salt Lake City drivers who were suspects of distracted driving. That number represents nearly double the amount of last year's campaign, reports KUTV.
The initiative took place during 75 distracted driving enforcement/education shifts conducted by the Salt Lake City Police Department and Utah Highway Safety Office, notes the report.
Known as "One text or call could wreck it all," the distracted driving campaign was designed to increase motorist's awareness of the hazards of distracted driving behaviors.
State and local officers shared what they witnessed on the roadways during the yearly initiative. Motorists were engaging in various distracted behaviors while behind the wheel. These included video chatting, texting, applying makeup, reading the newspaper, flossing teeth, and opening pill bottles, notes the report.
Several drivers were also seen with their pets in their laps.
Distracted driving claimed some 3,166 lives in 2017 alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In a March 2018 research study from AAA Foundation, 60.5% of drivers admitted to talking on a hands-free cellphone in the past month, while 49.1% talked on a hand-held cellphone.
