The national average price of diesel fuel rose 3 cents a gallon this week to $1.333, the highest price since October of last year, the Department of Energy (DOE) reported Aug. 19. The price of gasoline declined 0.1 cent last week to $1.392 per gallon. The rise broke a string of incremental rises and falls that kept the price of diesel in a range between $1.275 and $1.311 from late April through last week, DOE's historical figures show. The 3-cent rise in prices was the largest since a March 25 jump, also of 3 cents per gallon, and the last time diesel prices were this high was on Oct. 15, 2001, when the price was $1.353 per gallon. The price rose by at least 2.5 cents per gallon in all five of the geographic regions the DOE's Energy Information Administration measures. The most dramatic jump came on the West Coast where price rose 5.4 cents a gallon to $1.459.
