Detroit Diesel Corp. (DDC) confirmed it has applied to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for certification of its Series 60 diesel engines. According to a DDC release, the application will cover 20 of the currently available Series 60 ratings, and it further indicates that all will be fully compliant to the October 2002 emissions requirements. Additional ratings will be submitted for certification. DDC has adopted an emissions gas recirculation (EGR) system to address emissions concerns, and this prompted questions from customers and drivers about maintenance and reliability. A DDC spokesman indicated that experience on 2,500 Series 50 and 60 engines indicate performance is not diminished, and reliability may be improved. The company claims to be very near its target on fuel economy, and predicts continued good sales for the Series 60 once certification is granted.
