The North American International Auto Show in Detroit will move to June from January in 2020 as part of a rebooting of the event that will also incorporate more activities around autonomous and off-road driving, organizers have announced.

The show will begin the week of June 8. Earlier this year, it began on Jan. 13. It will remain at Cobo Center. The 2019 show will remain in January. It has been scheduled to begin Jan. 12 with press announcements starting two days later.

The changes have been made so the event can "better showcase the automotive leadership, development, and heritage our great city and region holds," said Doug North, president of event organizer Detroit Auto Dealers Association. Organizers said it would be a "transformational move."

The show has seen several automakers pull out of the 2019 event, including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. Other brands such as Jaguar, Land Rover, and Mitsubishi have also been absent.

"Moving the show to the summer opens up new opportunities for companies as well as creating new experiences for attendees," said Michigan's Gov. Rick Snyder.

The move will allow organizers to offer outdoor displays since the show will no longer take place in the dead of winter. A teaser video provides a glimpse into the event.
