Court Rules Ford Responsible for Unpaid Parking Fines
The Michigan Court of Appeals released its opinion Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, that Detroit had the legal right to collect more than $861,000 in unpaid parking fines from vehicles leased through Ford Motor Credit Co. from 1995-99, according to the Detroit News.
The Michigan Court of Appeals released its opinion Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, that Detroit had the legal right to collect more than $861,000 in unpaid parking fines from vehicles leased through Ford Motor Credit Co. from 1995-99, according to the Detroit News. Mike Jarvis, Ford Credit spokesman, told the Detroit News that Ford was not in control of the vehicles and shouldn’t have to pay the tickets. Jarvis considers the ruling a victory since hearings will now be required on who had the cars when the tickets were issued. The city has previously targeted Ford and other automakers when lessees did not pay parking tickets. In 2001, Detroit collected more than $9.5 million in traffic tickets, the newspaper reported.
