Detroit Auto Show attendees will be able to see firsthand the type of environments that Chevrolet vehicles are tested on through a 4-D virtual reality experience.
The 4-D experience — which Chevrolet refers to as the Virtual Dynamics Lab — features two main components: a gyrating seat and a virtual reality headset.
The headset will present attendees with a 360-degree, front passenger ride through a varity of courses, such as gravel roads, extreme temperature labs, and rock climbs that would be found on GM's testing facilities. The gyrating seat will move around based on the environment being presented through the virtual reality headsets.
This presentation, Chevrolet noted, is intended to give consumers a look at what its vehicles are put through before they're sent out to market. According to Chevrolet, its all-new 2019 Silverado will accumulate 7 million miles of testing and validation before the first truck is delivered.
GM’s Milford Proving Ground test facility comprises 4,000 acres of surface that equates to 137 miles of two-lane road. Inside its testing facility, GM has chambers capable of simulating extreme environmental conditions ranging from -40 degrees to 130 degrees Fahrenheit; altitudes from -7,000 to 12,500 feet; humidity from 10% to 90%; and wind speeds from 0 to 100 mph.
The 4-D experience will be open from Jan. 20 to Jan. 28 during normal hours.
