CEI and the Safety Wins team invited drivers to attend safety training at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich., Aug. 20. The day began at 8 a.m. with defensive driver education conducted by certified National Safety Council trainers, a session on NASCAR safety by Busch Grand National series racecar driver Jimmy Kitchens, a track tour, and tickets to Busch and Nextel pole qualifying.
The goal of Safety Wins is to provide classroom training to professional drivers in order to positively influence a reduction in the leading cause of work-related death in the United States: motor vehicle crashes. Safety Wins is made possible by a Susan Harwood Training grant through the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The program takes a positive reinforcement approach to awareness and education by holding safety training at NASCAR’s venues. Safety Wins is a cooperative project among the National Safety Council, Cavalier Home Builders, CEI/DriverCare, and NASCAR Busch racecar driver Jimmy Kitchens.
