CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Cambridge License Commission and City Manager Robert W. Healy has announced that six new hybrid taxicabs are now in service in Cambridge as part of the Clean Air Cab Program, according to the Web site wickedlocal.com.
This new initiative, sponsored by Whole Foods Market, is part of the License Commission's program to reduce the environmental impact of the city's taxicabs by encouraging a switch to hybrid vehicles. The $30,000 gift by Whole Foods Market is the first corporate partnership of a city-based hybrid taxicab program in the country. The License Commission gratefully acknowledges the support of local environmentalist John Moore in helping start the Clean Air Program in Cambridge. Moore also started this program in Boston last year.
The City of Cambridge will also be issuing grants of $10,000 each, from the sale of two medallions, to hackney owners who convert to hybrid vehicles.
