SACRAMENTO, CA - The California Senate on May 19 passed a bill that would increase penalties against collision repair shops that include airbag repair and restoration work on an accepted written estimate but then never actually perform the service. If passed, the legislation would make such a deceptive practice a misdemeanor punishable by a $5,000 fine, one year in county jail, or both.
The bill now goes to the California Assembly.
Existing law generally makes such a violation a misdemeanor that's punishable by a fine not exceeding $1,000, imprisonment not exceeding six months, or both.
The bill, introduced by Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco/San Mateo), has drawn support from the Certified Automotive Parts Association and the Center for Auto Safety.
