Calif. EV Rebate Program May Run Out of Funds
SACRAMENTO, CA - California's $5,000 rebate offered for the purchase of a qualifying electric car may turn out to be a short-lived incentive, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
SACRAMENTO, CA - California's $5,000 rebate offered for the purchase of a qualifying electric car may turn out to be a short-lived incentive, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
EV advocacy group Plug In America told the newspaper that the California Air Resources Board, which is offering the rebate program for eligible EVs and other zero-emission vehicles, has just enough money to pay out rebates for about 1,600 buyers. Those rebate funds may not last beyond mid-2011.
In light of the state's fiscal crisis, additional funding for the program isn't guaranteed.
Current vehicles eligible for California's $5,000 rebate include the Honda FCX Clarity, Nissan Leaf and Tesla Roadster. Upcoming vehicles expected to qualify for the rebate include the second-generation Chevrolet Volt, Ford Focus Electric, Ford Transit Connect Electric, Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota RAV4 EV and Tesla Model S, the L.A. Times reported.
