BMW's 2020 7 Series will enter its sixth generation with a more powerful optional V-8 engine, new technology, and enlarged kidney grille that aligns it more with the brand's 2019 X7 flagship SUV.
BMW will again offer three 7 Series trims for 2020, including the six-cylinder 740i, V-8 750i, and V-12 M760i. The 750i's twin-turbo V-8 now makes 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque for an increase of 80 hp and 74 lb.-ft. All-wheel drive is now standard on the 750i.
The 7 Series, which has been somewhat of a technology innovation lab for BMW in recent years, adds an array of new tech features, including an option for hands-free driving known as Extended Traffic Jam Assistant that works at speeds of up to 37 mph.
BMW is also updating its plug-in hybrid model, which changes its name to the 745e from the 740e. A turbo-six replaces a turbo-four, which adds 67 hp (to 389 hp) and 73 lb.-ft. (to 442 lb.-ft.). A new 12-kilowatt-per-hour lithium-ion battery is expected to increase its electric range.
2020 7 Series models go on sale in April. Pricing hasn't been announced.
