MUNICH, GERMANY – According to an article in the German newspaper, Der Zeit, BMW’s CEO, Norbert Reithofer, confirmed the German automaker’s plan to manufacture a super fuel-efficient model in order to comply with California emission regulations in 2012, according to www.redherring.com.
Reithofer said that it will have a completely new look, with two engines available — one will be a “very efficient combustion engine” and the other will be a “purely electric model.”
California lawmakers have stated that each automaker must have a zero emissions vehicle capable of a 200-mile range available to customers within four years.
No word on which brand the car will drive under; it could be a luxury micro-BMW or possibly added to the Mini line. There is some speculation that it come under a fourth brand.
