The 2014 BMW i3 battery-electric vehicle is being delivered to dealers after its arrival at the Port of New Jersey with fuel efficiency ratings that put it at the top among vehicles available in the U.S.
The BMW i3 delivers a range of 81 miles on a charge and gets an EPA window sticker rating of 138 miles per gallon equivalent city, 111 MPGe highway, and 124 MPGe combined, as first reported by The Electric BMW i3 blog.
In other news, the i3 base model and i3 REx extended range model are eligible in California for a $2,500 rebate under the state's Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) for zero-emission vehicles, accordin to the Center for Sustainable Energy's website.
On May 2, BMW delivered the first i3 to a customer. The BEV went to Charles Rabie, a Boston resident and Tufts University professor, BMW announced.
The i3's hybrid-synchronous electric motor produces 170 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The motor is powered by a 22-killowatt per hour lithium-ion battery. The base BMW i3 retails for $41,350, and the range-extender model starts at $45,200.
