A Big Island auditor says the police should gradually switch to a fleet of county-owned marked patrol cars, rather than subsidized personal vehicles, according to the Hawaii News newspaper.
The report says not all county police cars must be marked, but the police department should move away from a virtually all-unmarked vehicle fleet.
Estimates have differed on the economic impact of the switch, reported the Hawaii News. One study said it could save the county more than $200,000 a year. Another said it would cost nearly $10 million a year.
The newest audit says it likely will cost more, but does not put a price tag on it, added the Hawaii News.
