INGOLSTADT, GERMANY - Audi plans to introduce its first plug-in hybrid in 2014 and hopes to become the leading premium EV maker by 2020, Auto News Europe reported.

Franciscus van Meel, the automaker's manager for electric mobility strategy, spoke at a recent technical workshop at Audi headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany. During his talk, van Meel said Audi plans to introduce hybrid versions of the A8 upper-premium sedan and Q5 SUV in late 2011. A hybrid A6 and a range of electric cars, starting with the limited-edition battery-powered e-tron version of the R8, are expected to arrive in 2012.

Sales of Audi e-tron electric cars are projected to reach six-figure volume by 2020, van Meel said. Audi set up its e-tron division to develop and produce electric vehicles.
