FT. WORTH, TX - The American Trucking Associations (ATA) this week brought the group's "Share the Road" highway safety program to the Ft. Worth, Texas, area to educate teen drivers on how to safely share the road with tractor-trailers.
ProDrivers, a major transportation services company in the U.S., is also a participant in the safety tour.
On Thursday, Nov. 18, the "Share the Road" demonstration will be held at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas. A static demonstration with simulated highway lanes will show teen drivers how cars and trucks get into accidents. Professional truck drivers who have millions of accident-free driving miles will offer tips on blind spots, safe merging techniques, and stopping and following.
On Nov. 16 and Nov. 17, the tour made stops at James M. Steele Accelerated High School in Roanoke and Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club.
ATA is reaching out to teen drivers because motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of American teenagers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 16-year-old drivers are more likely to be involved in single vehicle crashes, be responsible for the crash, be cited for speeding, and have more passengers than older drivers.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, 35 percent of all truck-involved highway fatalities occur in a truck's blind spots. What's more, up to 75 percent of all truck-involved fatalities are unintentionally initiated by car drivers, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
By improving driver education for teen drivers, ATA hopes to make roads safer for all drivers.
