Assn. to Promote EV Charging Standards

TOKYO - Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi are among the companies that have formed the CHAdeMO Association, a group focused on increasing quick-charger installations worldwide for electric vehicles. The association will promote standardization of EV charging systems.

TOKYO - Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi are among the companies that have formed the CHAdeMO Association, a group focused on increasing quick-charger installations worldwide for electric vehicles. The association will promote standardization of EV charging systems.

The companies behind the CHAdeMO Association also include Fuji Heavy Industries and the Tokyo Electric Power Co.

Last August, Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, Fuji Heavy Industries and TEPCO started a preparatory committee. Then Toyota joined the committee and the association was established with the five companies as its executive members.

A total of 158 business entities and government bodies, including 20 foreign companies, are expected to join the association. Members will include automakers, electric utilities, charger manufacturers, charging service providers and others.

"CHAdeMO" is a trade name of a quick-charging method that the association proposes as a global industry standard.

"CHAdeMO" is an abbreviation of "CHArge de Move," equivalent to "charge for moving." It's a pun for "O cha demo ikaga desuka" in Japanese, meaning "Let's have a tea while charging" in English.
