Albuquerque Cuts Alt-Fuel Use to Save Money
ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The City of Albuquerque has decided to break away from alternative fuels in order to cut costs, according to KOAT.com.
ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The City of Albuquerque has decided to break away from alternative fuels in order to cut costs, according to KOAT.com.
The city has been running half of its vehicle fleet with alternative fuels for the past four years, but has recently decided to switch back to regular unleaded gas save the city money, reported KOAT.com.
"With the downturn in the economy, there's an opportunity for us to reduce our operating costs, at the same time, reduce maintenance costs," said John Soladay, director of Solid Waste, reported KOAT.
In February, the fire department had to replace fuel pumps in seven vehicles.
"When we first switched to E-85, we were seeing dozens of vehicles because of the corrosive nature of the fuel. It was mainly a fuel pump issue," said Albuquerque Police Department Chief Ray Schultz.
City leaders said the vehicles can be converted back to use flex fuel if the cost of gas skyrockets again, reported KOAT.
