Aftermarket Air Bag Clock Springs Recalled

Issued by Dorman Products, the recall affects more than 1,000 air bags at risk for malfunction.

Dorman Products is recalling 1,056 Dorman, Solutions, and OE Solutions aftermarket air bag clock spring assemblies because of potential malfunction of the driver’s air bag during a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The clock spring assemblies at issue were manufactured from Jan. 18 to Oct. 11 of this year. The coil harness may not have been centered when it was wound, NHTSA said. As a result, after the air bag is installed, turning the steering wheel may cause the cable to tear.

“If the cable tears, the driver’s air bag may not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury,” NHTSA warned on its website. Dorman will notify and provide affected vehicle owners with instructions for a diagnostic inspection of the clock spring assemblies.

Dorman dealers will replace any defective clock spring assembly, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in December. Dorman customer service can be reached at (800) 523-2492 (press 5).
