Under a new program announced by the Greater Twin Cities United Way, vehicles that were once driven by 3M Co. employees will now be leased to low-income families, reports the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The models are Dodge Intrepid, Ford Taurus, and Pontiac Grand Prix. Eligible parties can lease the two- and three-year old cars for $100 a month, with an option to buy the vehicle for $1 at the end of the two- and three-year lease periods. Gas, maintenance, and insurance could cost an additional $200, the United Way estimates. Leasing families will receive training in auto maintenance and financial management. David Powell, president of the 3M Foundation, said, “Reliable transportation is key to improving a family’s ability to become economically self-sufficient.”
