The 2016 Chevrolet Volt will offer a 40-percent improvement in electric-mode driving with a 53-mile range powered by the vehicle's second-generation Voltec extended-range electric propulsion system.

The Volt achieves this range improvement by running on a full charge of electricity stored in its new 18.4 killowatt-per-hour lithium-ion battery that's rated at a combined 106 MPGe gasoline equivalent.

Once the vehicle's battery runs low, a gas-powered generator operates to extend the driving range for a total of 420 miles on a full tank.

Chevrolet expects many next-generation Volt owners to use power solely from their batteries for more than 90 percent of trips. Currently, Volt owners use battery power on 80 percent of their trips, according to GM.

The average Volt owner can expect to travel more than 1,000 miles between gas refills, if they charge the vehicle regularly.

The next-generation Volt's new 1.5-liter gasoline engine acts as a range-extender and offers a combined EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of 42 mpg.
